TRESTLE
BOARD
Brethren,
The May stated was, as the old saying
goes, "as good as it gets". Our special guest
for the meal was our Grand Master, Most Worshipful James
Edward Litten and some of the Grand Lodge Officers. Our
meeting was attended by approximately 60 brethren. I
would like to thank my wife, Dean, Brother Mike Smith's
wife, Marty, for the meal and cakes and Right Worshipful
Brad Phillips and his wife Jessie, for the homemade ice
cream. A most delicious meal served by special people.
After supper, we conducted the business
of the Lodge; after introductions, the Grand Master
spoke on his theme, "Setting a Good Example".
I believe each of us understand the
Grand Master's theme, when we look around our society
today and see a crumbling, chaotic world, spinning out
of control. Freemasonry has always set a good example. I
would hope others would latch on to the principles set
forth by our Fraternity.
At our next stated meeting, we will
conduct our business and have a short program on Holy
Saints John.
We have agreed to attend New Hope
Methodist Church for their 11:00 worship service on June
19, 2016 in celebration of Holy Saints John. The church
is located on Browns Mill Road which connects Route 29
and 501. If you need directions call me at Phillips
Equipment (434)-821-2649. Let us make this a special
Father's Day.
Tuesday, June 14th, is Flag Day- with
the turmoil in the world today and our country's
political embarrassments, you wonder if we are as great
a nation as we proclaim. One point is that none of us
are anxious to leave, whereas there are countless others
to die to get here. America is still great, the cogs in
the wheel need repair "every once in a while".
As we begin this next few weeks of
celebration our nation's birthday, I would like to take
you back a bit to October 21, 1892. On that particular
morning, children across the United States rose to their
feet and faced a newly installed American Flag and for
the first time received 23 words written by a man few
people today can name.
Francis Bellamy wrote "The Pledge
of Allegiance" reportedly in two hours. The words
did not change until 1954 when congress added the words
"Under God" to distinguish the United States
from "godless communism". Today 36 states
require public schools to make time for the pledge; four
states, Vermont, Iowa, Wyoming and Hawaii, do not. It is
a daily order of business for the United States Senate
the House of Representatives and proudly our flag is
presented in our Masonic Lodges and the Pledge of
Allegiance is recited. Thank you Veterans for your
service.
Brethren since our May meeting, Brother
Edwin Brown Gough, Jr., has entered into that House not
made with human hands. In our prayers continue to pray
for our Masonic Family.
Enjoy the Summer, be safe, be careful in
the heat. Happy Father's Day.
See you in Lodge, June 16th Stated
Meeting.
